This past Monday marked the beginning of this year’s Iowa Legislative session, and one lawmaker shares his own priorities.
State Senator for District 10 Jake Chapman says with the beginning of the session he wants to focus on important issues such as eliminating the statute of limitations for sexual assault of minors, which became a law last session as well as truth in sentencing on the victim’s behalf.
“We need to update our laws when it comes to truth in sentencing. Oftentimes you hear these crazy stories or read about them in the newspaper that someone gets ten years in prison and they are walking out of prison a year later. Well why? Because there is no truth in sentencing”
Chapman tells Raccoon Valley Radio the reason for people getting out of prison early is because of several factors that are currently in place.
“Ten years doesn’t really mean ten years and so I want to focus in on that issue as well and see what progress we can make there.”
Chapman says lawmakers will look to build off the successes they’ve had and he is excited for the beginning of the legislative session.
