Todd Gordon is the Activities Director in the Greene County School District. Esports was added to the calendar this school year and Gordon says it’s growing quickly throughout the state in high schools. “It’s still a club sport, but gaining a lot of popularity. Statewide, I want to say there are about 40 schools with Esports. That’s just going to continue to grow, as are the opportunities that are there with Esports.” He added some colleges now offer Esports scholarships, which opens more opportunities.

The A.D. said there’s more to it than simply playing a game. “There’s a lot of teamwork involved when they play. They have to talk to each other, communicate with each other, and we’ve even taught sportsmanship!”

Greene County currently has two varsity teams with each team playing a different game. A.D. Gordon said although Home and Visiting teams are designated, teams play from their home schools, so travel isn’t normally involved.
