A suspect has been named and arrest warrants have been filed by the Jefferson Police Department for forging checks to area businesses.
Police Chief Dave Morlan says 40 year-old Stacy Renee Schwering of Pleasant Hill is accused of writing bad checks for services and items to Casey’s General Store and the Pizza Ranch in Jefferson.
He states that since late December of 2013, Schwering had taken checks from a Laura Theobald who had cleaned out her old residence in Des Moines and had thrown out the checks that were from a closed account at Mahaska State Bank which no longer exists in Oskaloosa.
Morlan points out that the female suspect also passed bad checks at Papa John’s and Village Inn in Des Moines during the same time as the ones that were accepted by the Jefferson businesses.
Morlan notes that they filed three warrants on Schwering yesterday for a Class B Felony for ongoing criminal conduct, a Class D Felony for seven counts of forgery and a serious misdemeanor for fourth-degree theft. He adds that she will likely face other charges from Polk County. Each warrant carries a $5,000 cash-only bond.
