An annual tradition for the Greene County Peace Officers Association continued earlier this month.
Jefferson Police Chief Mark Clouse tells Raccoon Valley Radio police officers and members of the Greene County Sheriff’s Office took eight Greene County kids to Boone Walmart, each with $150, to shop for their parents, siblings and themselves. Clouse notes they partnered with the Greene County School District for a bus and driver for transportation. He shares his thoughts on the program that builds a positive relationship with area youth, while also making their holidays brighter.
“One of my all time favorite days of the year, without question. (It) went so smooth. We went to Boone to the Walmart. We went over there a little over an hour, just went real smooth. Great time, we had a great time.”
Clouse explains why they continue to shop for gifts outside of the county.
“Most of the reason is what they’re (the kids) actually looking to purchase on that day. A lot of nerf toys, gaming equipment, those types of things are why we unfortunately leave our community to do that. But we by all means support our community the rest of the year.”
Following the trip back from Boone, the kids went to the Law Enforcement Center Administrative Building, where the kids, law enforcement and Jefferson Kiwanis volunteers wrapped the gifts and enjoyed free pizza courtesy of Casey’s General Store. Clouse says they take donations all year for Shop With a Cop, and donations can be dropped off at the administrative building, with checks payable to the Greene County Peace Officers Association, earmarked for Shop With a Cop.
