A community service project that has been going on for 30 years in Jefferson was recently recognized at the state level.

The Iowa Governor’s Volunteer Award was given to the Jefferson Elks Lodge #2306, along with the Boy Scout Troop #534 and Cub Scout Pack #534 for their efforts of cleaning the ditches of trash. The two scout organizations have been doing this same project, along a two mile stretch of Highway 4, south of Jefferson, for 30 years. Cub Scout Master Chad Stevens talks about receiving the state award.

“That was really impressive. I wasn’t aware that we were going to get an award like that. But yeah, it was really a great honor to be able to be a part of that with the scouts, and with the Elks, and to receive the Governor’s (Volunteer) Award.”

Following this year’s project, the two groups enjoyed pizza at the Elks Lodge.
