Class 2A wrestlers took took to the mats at 9 a.m. Thursday to begin the Iowa High School Athletic Association state tournament. Matches from 17 Raccoon Valley Radio listening area wrestlers were broadcast “live” on all three RVR stations, online at www.raccoonvalleyradio.com, on smartphone and iPhones.

Five of the 17 won in the opening round including all three area wrestlers at 152 lbs. Perry senior Seth Stetzel was a 15-1 major decision winner over Kory Kuecker of Algona. Stetzel improved to 37-5 and he’ll face Griffin Osing of Albia, also 37-5 in the Friday 9 a.m. quarterfinal round. Greene County senior Jeremy Scheuermann won 7-3 over Tanner Hild of Webster City to improve to 42-5.Scheuermann survived a last second headlock attempt by Hild for the victory. Next up for the Ram senior is Sergeant Bluff-Luton senior Bret Tomoson, who is 46-3. Sophomore Zach Johnston of ADM won his opening match 5-2 over Douglas Perrin of Osage. Johnston is now 36-7 and he’ll face Vinton-Shellsburg junior Michael Neal, who is 29-4.

The other two first round winners from the area are ADM junior Trevor Harsh at 132 lbs. and Woodward-Granger senior Colton Milosevich at 120. Milosevich won by fall in 1:04 over Connor Ascherl of MOC-Floyd Valley and he’s now 42-3 and will meet Dillion Cox of Atlantic , 47-5, in the quarterfinals. Harsh, now 37-13. Harsh was a 1-0 winner over Conner Wickman of West Delaware, Manchester, and next up in the quarterfinals is #1 rated and undefeated Bryce Leshen of Albia.

Four others from the area are alive on the consolation side of the bracket after they lost opening round matches, but won in the first consolation round. Among this group that will wrestle in the second consolation round tomorrow morning are Mason Miller of Winterset at 126 lbs., Jordan Challen of Greene County at 132, Tommy Bradshaw of Greene County at 138, and Nathan Heath of ADM at 285. Miller lost to undefeated and number one ranked Shadow Leshen of Albia in round one, then won 8-3 in the consolation round over Maxwell Forsyth of Charles City. Miller stands at 24-4 on the season. Challen is 37-7 after going 1-1 on Thursday. The Ram junior lost 12-7 to Osage freshman Brock Jennings in round one, before coming back with a 5-1 consolation victory over Kade Steuhm of Solon. Bradshaw lost by fall in 2:47 to Bradley Conley of Mediapolis in the opening round, but bounced back in a big way to win a 17-2 technical fall over Tionte Parks of Assumption Davenport. Parks was fifth in 2013 at 145 lbs., but was no match for the Ram sophomore, who is now 41-3. Heath, a sophomore, is 37-10 after losing by fall in 3:32 to second ranked senior Tyler Putney of Forest City. Heath trailed Clarinda senior Dakota Calfee in the last period, but turned the tide and won by fall in 5:17 in the consolation round.
