Iowa CentralWith a high demand for manufacturing jobs in Greene County, Iowa Central Community College is giving the public an opportunity to earn college credit and receive training to help meet that demand.

Project Manager Tim Heller with ICCC says through a federal grant, they are offering basic welding classes for free to the public.  The goal of the program is to give people basic welding courses that they can either join the workforce or continue their education.

He explains another benefit of the program.

“Also for Greene County, we understand that you guys are looking to expand and offer other opportunities for companies to come in the area.  And if we get more people skilled in those trades then that’ll be an additional piece of attraction for outside folks to come in.”

The program includes five classes that will start on Tuesday, March 4th and will be every Tuesday and Thursday night until July 31st.  Classes will be held at the Greene County High School.  To be eligible for the classes, you have to meet certain income guidelines adds Heller.

Guidelines range from a single person making $28,725 or less all the way up to a family of eight making $99,075 with each additional person adding another $10,050.

If you meet that standard, then Heller encourages you to sign up for the non-credit classes.  You will receive a non-industry certificate through the community college and if you want to continue your education for a full degree, then these classes can transfer to college credit and you can continue to pay for your education after that.

Space is limited and the deadline to sign up is by Tuesday, February 25th.  Call 1-800-362-2793 to register or for more information.
