The ADM girls basketball team is just four days removed from its season-ending playoff loss to Prairie City-Monroe, so the wound that comes with the season having already come and gone is still fresh.
We heard head coach Brett Watson say yesterday that bidding his seniors farewell is always the toughest part of his job, and while it is next to impossible to console the likes of Madi Bertman, Haley Canney and Kendra Chapman now that their Tigers careers are over, they were integral parts to ADM’s best game of the season. Coach Watson even calls the win his personal highlight of the 2013-14 campaign.
“That last regular season game against Bondurant-Farrar… that was probably one of the better basketball games that we put together. It was a big win for us and we really thought that was going to propel us into the tournament to go on a run, but you know, that just didn’t happen. That was a nice win for us especially because Bondurant had been playing such great basketball beating Perry, beating Ballard, and so beating them handily was pretty nice for us to do.”
Watson’s three seniors combined for 27 of the Tigers’ 54 points in that contest, which would be their final game ever inside the ADM North Gym.
Saying goodbye to this class of seniors is particularly difficult for Coach Watson, who took over the ADM girls program when Bertman, Canney and Chapman were freshman.
“They’ve put in a lot of time these four years and it’s going to be really weird not having them around. Each one of those girls brings a unique personality, they’re fun girls to be around, they love to be about the team and love to have some fun… So, with their departures it means we’re going to need to have some girls step up in different areas. But yeah, we’re really going to miss those three seniors.”
We’ll continue to have season recap coverage of the ADM girls in the days ahead. The boys season isn’t quite finished though–tune-in to their regular season finale tomorrow on K107. Tip-off is scheduled for approximately 7:30pm.
