Jefferson Telecom is reminding customers and the public about a change in how to make phone calls.

According to a new designation that was approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) from last year, certain three-digits prefixes will need to be used when making a phone call, including 319 and 515. Beginning October 24th, when making phone calls that have area codes 319 and 515, must use the full 10-digit dialing for local calls. However, you do not need to dial “1” before the area code for local calls. After October 24th, if you call a local phone number using only seven-digits, you will get a message that your phone call cannot be completed as dialed.

When the switch happens, if you make a local call, you will not be charged a long distance call rate. If you dial “1” then the area code and phone number, you will be charged for a long distance call. Other services that only use a three-digit dialing system, such as 211 for essential services, 911 for emergencies, and 411 for directory assistance, will remain the same.

Jefferson Telecom urges everyone to check their other devices or systems that currently use a seven-digit number that may need to be switched to ten digits, such as alarms or security systems.
