A local lawmaker’s sponsored bill was recently struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Iowa’s Third Congressional District Representative Cindy Axne sponsored the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Eviction Moratorium, which would allow renters to be exempt from eviction in an area of high COVID-19 transmission. However, the U.S. Supreme Court recently struck down the moratorium and concluded that the CDC does not have the sweeping authority to keep the eviction moratorium going. Anxe says that mass evictions in Iowa are scary and is calling on funding.

“We got to keep a roof over folks’ heads, the money is out there.”

Axne states that the issue is that only 25 percent of the money that was set aside for the moratorium has been distributed to renters and landlords.
