The City of Perry is looking to change their ordinance in regards to large wind turbines in order to allow room for a company to build structures within the city limits.

The first reading of the ordinance repeal and replacement has been approved by the City Council and City Administrator Butch Niebuhr says it should be a positive thing for Perry.

“We had a company approach us that is going to put up some large wind turbines, commercial wind turbines right close to Perry and right up against the city limits.  The county doesn’t have their ordinance set up for these commercial wind turbines either.  We thought when we talked with the property owner they would be willing to bring that (agricultural) property into the city limits.  So what we looked at was changing the city ordinance to allow for large commercial wind turbines into the city limits if it was on ag property alone, so it has to be in the middle of a farm field basically for that to work inside the city limits” says Niebuhr.

Niebuhr says by making this change, their hope is things can move forward in a more timely manner.

“We think this will speed up the process for the commercial property developer to put up these wind turbines.  We thing we have property owners that have ag property that are willing to bring their property into city limits and we think our process will speed that up for them.”

The second reading will be considered at the next council meeting and Niebuhr expects a building permit to be applied for soon.
