The Panora City Council is considering a major project in the City that would cost around $2.14 million.
The Jackson Street Improvement project would fix issues that stem from not having a storm sewer system on the west side of town. This means that water is flooding driveways, backyards and basements. Mayor Patrick Parker says it would also fix another issue.
“There is a water line that runs up that street that part of it has lead based joints and part of it has galvanized piping. So it has two water line issues that we are working on to update in town.”
Parker tells Raccoon Valley Radio the reason the Council is considering doing the improvements to Jackson Street is because the city is about to pay off two other projects in 2024 that bonds were issued for that include a highway project and 3rd Street improvements. He talks about other ways to finance the Jackson Street project.
“And there is a certain amount of taxes that we get in for debt services and by doing the Jackson Street project. We can do another street in town and we have a great potential being able to lower the tax rate were taking to collect to pay that debt back.”
Another part of the funding will come from the storm water utility fund. The project’s expected completion will be next summer or the summer of 2023 pending Council approval. The Council will consider approving the project at their next meeting.
