As the coronavirus pandemic continues to change, there is a group of people who may need an additional dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Dallas County Health Department Public Information Officer Ann Cochran says only a small number of people are encouraged by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to receive a booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

“These people are those who have immune systems that are not working properly because of health issues such as cancer treatment, receiving an organ transplant or stem cell transplant or other disease. You should talk to your healthcare provider before getting a booster dose.”

Cochran tells Raccoon Valley Radio the reason behind the potential need for a booster dose is because studies are showing that some immunocompromised individuals don’t build up as much immunity after vaccination. Cochran explains not everyone needs a booster dose.

“Fully vaccinated people with a healthy immune system do not need any additional doses at this time.”

Additionally, Cochran encourages those who haven’t been vaccinated to do so. A full list of where you can be vaccinated in Dallas County can be found here.
