There is one week left to submit grant applications to the Greene County Community Foundation.
GCCF President Tim Heisterkamp says last year they gave away $106,000 to 20 organizations for projects that benefit the community or help others in some way. This year, they have a little over $90,000 in gambling revenue from the state to give away.
He explains the two extreme situations they had in terms of the amount of money they had to give away and the requests that were made. In 2011, he states they didn’t receive enough requests to fulfill the amount of money they had to give away and so a second round of applications was opened up. However, in 2012, it was a different story.
“Last year, we were just the opposite. We had one-third the amount of what was asked for, so close to $300,000 was being applied for and we had about $100,000 to give away. Hopefully we’ll get enough requests this year that we can give all $90,000 away easily.”
He points out that they continually take donations to deposit into their permanent endowment fund which has a little over $500,000 in it. Heisterkamp notes that the Foundation can withdraw up to 5% of that fund to help meet other grant requests that may not be fulfilled by the state gambling revenue they receive.
Grant applications are available at the Greene County ISU Extension office in Jefferson or on their website at extension.iastate.edu/greene. Application deadline is Thursday, February 13th and the announcement of the recipients will be on Saturday, February 22nd. You can also print off a copy here.
