With the conclusion of this year’s Iowa legislative session, there were several major bills that were passed by lawmakers.

House District 20 Representative Ray Sorensen says a highlight this session was floor managing the governor’s broadband access bill, which also became law.

“For me, connecting all of Iowa, leveling the playing field in the sense of e-commerce, and availability, and being able to work and life in rural Iowa, not only on the other side of the state but possibly on the other side of the country or world, is very important to me.”

Other legislative bills that Sorensen pointed towards as being impactful included child care reform and tax law changes.

Sorensen says one of the main disappointments for him this session was not getting his bill on seizure safe in schools passed through the Senate, which he believes schools are not knowledgeable enough to handle students with seizures.

“What we were recommending is that every two years that educators and people who have students watch a one-hour YouTube video and/or have a group come in and give an education. And then also in the bill to allow a board to kind of look at all of those, this board could kind of make sense for each school district and each teacher.”

Sorensen is hopeful to get his bill through both chambers next session.
