Greene County and Regina Catholic of Iowa City will meet tomorrow at 12:10 p.m. in a quarterfinal round match in Des Moines at Cownie Soccer Complex in the Class 1A Boys’ State Soccer Tournament. The winner moves on to the semifinals on Thursday at noon. The Regals have won seven State titles including in 2019 when they needed overtime to get past Greene County in the opening round.

The Rams are 14-6 and riding a five match winning streak, despite losing senior Luis Velazco to a broken leg 3-1/2 games into the season in early April at Carroll. Coach Carl Behne talked with Raccoon Valley Radio about how the offense changed without Luis and how the team came together to make it to State. “This year we’ve had to lean much more on our defense and strong goal keeping from a freshman goalie in Gabe (Ebersole). Having a really strong midfield has really linked that defensive presence to our offensive threat. So, as far as weighing our success based on our experience and really having to shift the style of play that we’ve been accustomed to, we’ve done a nice job and I couldn’t be more proud of the boys for being adaptable like that.”

The Rams and Regals can be heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com with coverage at 11:50 a.m. and the first kick at 12:10 p.m.
