As the school year begins to wrap up and people take on summer activities, summer reading programs can have an impact for future learning.

Deputy Perry Public Library Director Misty VonBehren says summer reading programs serve an important role for younger children, teens and even adults as they navigate through the summer off from learning.

“It’s extremely important not only just the youth but the teenagers and all the way up through adult. It’s known as the ‘summer slide’ which is what happens when you are not actively engaging in that reading comprehension throughout the summer.”

VonBehren explains why this year summer reading programs are even more critical.

“I think that it’s more important even this summer simply because of the last year that we have had where kids have not had the opportunity to go to school full time and really get their education and the comprehension in reading.”

The registration for the summer reading programs with the Perry Public Library is now open for youth through adults. You can register by going here or you can register by going to the library.
