The Greene County Board of Supervisors met Monday in regular session.

During open forum, Raccoon River Watershed Association President and Cooper resident Chris Henning addressed the Board. She reviewed the recently report by an advocacy group called American Rivers and that the Raccoon River was ranked ninth for its “America’s Most Endangered Rivers.” She reminded everyone to be better aware of the river and the environmental impacts it has, which Supervisor Chair John Muir agreed to educate the public and address issues if needed.

The Board then met the new Greene County Service Coordinator for Central Iowa Community Services with Kim Schomaker, who will be working in Greene County two days a week and will continue to use her Boone County office number.

County Attorney Thomas Laehn presented a 28E agreement for the intention of the Board to contribute $250,000 to the construction of the new Greene County Early Learning Center. The Board agreed with the initial draft.

Greene County Development Corporation Executive Director Ken Paxton talked about two new programs. He described an internship program where three Greene County High School students work with six local businesses to improve their online and social media presence. The program was fulfilled financially with a grant through the Greene County Community Foundation and GCDC.

Paxton also talked about a veteran incentive program. He said the program was in existence after Greene County became the first Home Base Iowa community to get veterans to live and work in the county. He wanted to return to portions of that program with a $2,000 relocation incentive, where GCDC would pay $1,000 and the hiring employer pays $1,000; along with the Board to contribute $1,500 as a downpayment reimbursement on a new home in the county for the veteran. The Board tabled its decision for further review of the request.

The Board then discussed the music policy for the Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower. Following the discussion, the Board agreed with the draft and are expected to approve the policy next week.

Finally, the Board approved the County Treasurer’s quarterly report and the funding agreement for a competitive grant from Grow Greene County Gaming Corporation for $128,000 to purchase an ambulance as presented.
