Two organizations are teaming up for a birding activity at Dunbar Slough.

The Raccoon River Watershed Association and Carroll County Conservation Board are hosting a birdwatching event on Saturday, April 17th at 9am. Carroll County Conservation Naturalist and Jefferson resident Matt Wetrich will lead the program. He will teach attendees how to identify birds, migration patterns and explore different birdwatching sites at Dunbar Slough. He advises of some equipment to bring along to make the experience more enjoyable.

“A simple field guide, a bird book is very helpful so you can start to identify things, and then binoculars. You can get a decent pair for $75 and up. But the neat thing is that people can use their phones anymore. You can hook your phone up to binoculars and use your binoculars as a telephoto lens, it’s called digi-scoping, so that’s kind of an easy way not have to buy a camera for a while, because the cameras on phones are so great anymore.”

Participants are to meet at the Casey’s General Store in Scranton at 9am and everyone will head to Dunbar Slough from there. The event is free, open to the public, and no pre-registration is necessary.
