With warmer temperatures means more unique vehicles popping up in the City of Jefferson.

Police Chief Mark Clouse says golf carts are making their appearance again on City streets and he advises those vehicles are legal to drive on the road, along with a new utility terrain vehicle (UTV). He explains the difference between a UTV, which is legal to drive on streets in Jefferson and an all terrain vehicle (ATV), which is illegal.

“The difference is the side-by-side seating. On an ATV, you’re going to straddle seat somebody behind the driver. Those are not allowed on the streets, the 4-wheelers. The UTV, the utility vehicles where you side-by-side seat, those are now currently allowed on the street.”

Clouse notes both the golf carts and UTVs must have a slow-moving sign attached to the rear of the vehicle and an orange flag posted above the vehicle. The driver of either vehicle must have a valid driver’s license, along with vehicle insurance and the vehicles can’t be driven between dusk and dawn.
