The deadline for paying property taxes is fast approaching.
Greene County Treasurer Katlynn Mechaelsen tells Raccoon Valley Radio the deadline for paying the second half installment of property taxes is March 31st. She says if you don’t pay your property taxes by then, you will be assessed a penalty starting April 1st. The penalty then increases every month and if the taxes are not paid by October 21st, the property will then go to a tax sale.
Mechaelsen notes that there is no delay in paying property taxes this year. She points out that if a property owner has a mortgage, the property taxes are typically paid through their escrow. She adds, a property owner can always check with their personal banker.
Finally, Mechaelsen says those who have not paid their property taxes can go online to iowatreasurers.org or use the dropbox on the eastside of the Greene County Courthouse.
