The Greene County Supervisors recently approved the 2022 fiscal year budget.

Overall, property taxes will go up at the start of the next fiscal year on July 1st. The general tax levy rate will be $6.49 per $1,000 of property valuation and the rural tax levy rate will be $3.40 per $1,000 of valuation. The total tax levy rate is $9.89 per $1,000. Additionally, the Board approved its maximum property tax dollars, which included general services not to exceed $4,583,055 for a 2.16-percent increase, and rural services not to exceed $1,859,792 for a 5.25-percent increase.

Supervisor Chair John Muir says no one likes to see their property taxes go up, but he felt it was needed, due to an increase in county services.

“Some of that is law enforcement, we’ve added another deputy and we were shorthanded. We have taken over the ambulance service, which is a service I don’t think the county wanted to be without. We’re a very conservative board. So we don’t like spending more money and having to do that. But I think that hopefully the services we’re providing back to the residents of Greene County, it’s working.”
