A bill put out by Iowa State Senator for District 10 Jake Chapman regarding big tech censorship has passed the full senate.
The bill would remove tax incentives for technology companies in Iowa if they censor anyone’s right to free speech. Chapman says the legislation has passed the Senate without major changes to the policy other than some technical adjustments. Chapman points out the bill passed along party lines which he was slightly disappointed in.
“What we heard from the opposing side was what is the economic impact to the state by removing these tax credits and these tax breaks if they choose to censor. The response is very simple. It is first and foremost my responsibility and my duty to protect Iowan’s constitutional rights.”
Chapman says another argument has been about the economic impact the companies have brought to the state. He doesn’t feel there has been that much of an impact.
“I would argue there isn’t much of a revenue stream because we are not collecting much of anything through taxes because we are giving them full tax breaks. They aren’t required to pay anything on their energy consumption.”
The legislation now moves on to the Iowa House where Chapman is hopeful it can continue to be worked on.
