Iowa lawmakers are continuing to comment on the new changes to how elections are done in the state.

House District 20 Representative Ray Sorensen tells Raccoon Valley Radio the new law tightens up possible election fraud by updating voter databases.

“We want to ensure that our voter lists are well maintained. We can help ensure that if someone moves away they won’t be mailed an absentee ballot request or similar items to that same address. It’s something that I know even people in my district experienced firsthand in the 2020 election.”

Sorensen points out another part of the law is issuing technical infractions to county auditors who don’t follow state law with elections, which can be up to $10,000. But there still a way county auditors can contest the infraction.

“It creates an appeal process, which wasn’t before available. So if you got a technical infraction as an auditor beforehand you just had to deal with it. So whether it was wrongfully issued or not, you just had to swallow it. Now we’ve created an appeal process.”

Even though Sorensen admits he didn’t particularly like the reduction in early voting days, he believes the new law overall accomplished what he felt was needed, which was making it easier to vote but harder to cheat.
