When the changing of the seasons comes some housekeeping regimens to prevent issues inside your home.

Adair and Guthrie County Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Kempf tells Raccoon Valley Radio about the difficulties of having frozen ground, as warmer temperatures return, and when precipitation starts back up.

“We remind people of (that) we have a lot of surface drainage issues with people getting water in their basements, tiles being plugged up, things like that. So we remind everybody, it’s good to make sure that you got those sump pumps out, and you got them checked if they’re set on an automatic flow.”

Kempf advises homeowners to make sure their valuables are off the ground and away from walls in the basement if you have moisture problems, which can cause mold to appear.

“Should a person have mold or things like that, we have information that’s available, and so does public health and environmental health on how to treat that with a bleach mixture to help kill that mold.”

Kempf suggests running dehumidifiers in the basement to help prevent mold and moisture from building up.
