High school football district assignments for 2021 and ’22 were announced this morning by the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Greene County is in Class 2A District 8, as they have been in recent seasons. Coach Caden Duncan’s team is grouped with Clarinda, Clarke (Osceola), Des Moines Christian, Red Oak, and Shenandoah. Class 2A teams play eight regular season games, meaning the Rams will have three non-district contests instead of the usual four. Last year due to COVID-19, the regular season was shortened across the state to no more than seven regular season games and all teams were allowed to enter the playoffs. This fall and beyond, teams will need to again qualify for the playoffs, but the IHSAA has not yet released what qualifying method(s) will be used.
The Rams went 7-3 last season and advanced to the round of 16 in the 2A playoffs. A majority of the 2020 starters will be back in ’21. There were just seven seniors on the football roster for Greene County last fall.
Atlantic won the district in 2020. The Trojans moved up in class to 3A. Des Moines Christian was 4-3 with 13 seniors, Clarinda 4-5 with nine seniors, Shenandoah went 3-5 with eight seniors, Clarke was 1-7 and had 14 seniors, while Red Oak had just one senior on its 0-8 team.
