
Dallas Center – Grimes boys basketball team had a 3A quarterfinal on Tuesday afternoon at state in Des Moines, as the Mustangs faced the Davenport Assumption Knights. After a close first half, the Knights pulled away in the second half to take a 56-42 victory. DCG concludes their season at 20-4 while Davenport Assumption improves their record to 19-6 and moves to semifinal play.
It was a high scoring first quarter between the two teams as both teams found their groove offensively, with the Knights leading 18-15 after one quarter and 33-29 at halftime. The Mustangs were able to find three first quarter threes, and got some great looks thanks to senior Luke Rankin’s 10 first half points.
DCG hit a rare wall on the offensive end in the second half, as they only put up 13 points in the entire half only making 4 field goals on 18 attempts while the Knights were able to pull away with solid offensive execution down the stretch. The Knights were able to get into the lane with 26 points in the paint, and also got solid shooting outside with six team threes.
DCG was lead in scoring from senior Luke Rankin with 13 points and senior Alex Thomas with 11 points in their final games. Davenport Assumption got 25 points out of Emarion Ellis, who also tallied sevens rebounds and 5 assists as well.
Five different seniors played their final game in a Mustang uniform, as they were able to help lead a return to state for the first time since 2016-17.
