Iowa State Senator for District 10 Jake Chapman has introduced legislation about making consequences for big tech companies who censor speech, which could have financial impacts.
Chapman addresses the arguments about his bill possibly eliminating tax breaks for big tech companies that might create a financial impact.
“One, of course we are happy for economic development in our state but two how much are we willing to sell our bill of rights for? The notion that perhaps we should ignore this censorship because of money is quite ludicrous from my perspective.”
Chapman argues lawmakers can’t ignore significant issues simply because money is being made from the investment. He points out that it shouldn’t matter what the financial investment is, lawmakers shouldn’t turn their backs on issues.
“At what point are legislators willing to turn their back towards the Constitution, towards the document that we were sworn to uphold and frankly there is no price in my book that could buy, or we could sell our freedoms for.”
Chapman’s bill, Senate File 402, made it through the first funnel week and is still viable for the session. .
