One of the benefits of having a young team on the mats is identifying the kids who make vast improvements over the course of a season.

West Central Valley head wrestling coach Ben Strandberg says one of the freshman really caught his eye during the COVID-plagued season.

“One of our freshman Jathan Edgington is one of the ones in my opinion that just made huge strides this year. He’ll get a diamond in the rough or most improved award, however you want to say it. Coming in, he had very little experience, then he got third at conference, placing in tournaments by the end of the year. He’s a good example of one of them and he’s already getting into the weight room, getting excited about football next year, track this year and focusing a little bit on wrestling too.”

Edgington pinned Woodward-Granger’s Tjaden Smeltzer in 2:42 to earn that third-place finish in the 138-pound bracket at the Conference Tournament.
