With the proposed changes to early voting in Iowa, one Iowa lawmaker says there has been no reports of voter fraud in the state.

House Representative for District 19 Carter Nordman says the proposed changes to early voting and absentee ballots in Iowa isn’t coming from voter fraud in recent Iowa elections.

“This bill was not based off of a system that was being cheated or fraudulent and we have made that very clear.”

Nordman says lawmakers saw good election cycles in 2018 and 2020, but they sought to improve upon the system already in place. Nordman compares the system to a business and says he wouldn’t remain idle when things were going well.

“We looked at it and said, ‘I think there are still things that can be tweaked, there are still some things that we can do to strengthen our election system and that’s what we did.’”

The proposed bill would reduce Iowa’s early voting period from 29 days to 20 days and shorten the time for absentee requests from 120 days down to 70 days. The bill passed in the Senate and most recently passed the House
