Healthy sleep can be an overlooked factor when it comes to overall health.

Somnitech Director of Clinic Operations Amber Brown says approximately 22 million Americans are affected by obstructive sleep apnea, and she says that number is underserved due to so many undiagnosed cases.

Brown adds that if you are one of those many undiagnosed cases, a sleep disorder could cause major health issues.

“The consequences of not getting your potential underlying sleep disorder checked out could be high blood pressure, stroke, increased risk of heart disease and unfortunately death.  Positive results of having that sleep study done could increase your quality of life. We see patients with uncontrolled diabetes for years get their underlying sleep disorder managed and their blood sugars also come in a more manageable scenario.”

Brown suggests discussing sleep issues with your medical provider as a first step to see if a sleep study is appropriate.
