The Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament began at 9 a.m. with 1A first round matches at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Seven area 1A wrestlers in in action with first round winners advancing to the quarterfinals tomorrow morning. First round losers come right back this morning with a consolation first round match and consolation first round losers will have their tournament come to an end.

An exciting finish at 106 for ACGC freshman Tegan Slabaugh (36-8) used a take down and three point near fall as time ran out to win 11-8 over Easton Schlabaugh of Highland Riverside. Also, at 106 Ogden freshmen Kolton Muson (33-6) lost a 13-1 major decision to Easton Krall of Wapsie Valley, Fairbank.

at 120 lbs. Nodaway Valley’s Elliot Cooney (43-5) won by fall over Blaine McGraw of Alburnett in 4:57. Kole Munson (36-4) of Ogden lost a 12-8 decision to Ryan Steinlage of I-35 (Truro) at 126 lbs. At 132 lbs., Gunnar Larsen of ACGC (13-3) lost to Michael McClelland of Don Bosco, Gilbertville by a final of 8-0.

Avery McCloud of Ogden lost by fall in 1:01 to two-time State Champion Robert Avila of Lisbson. The final first round area wrestler was Cale Rowley of ACGC who lost by fall in 1:16 to Lisbon’s Lincoln Holub.

The consolation first round is underway and Kolton Munson won by fall in 4:32 over Brayden Petersen of Belle Plaine. Munson will next wrestle in the second consolation round Friday morning.

Kale Munson saw his tournament come to an end with a second loss today. The elder Munson lost the first round consolation match by fall in 59 seconds to Brody Neighbor of Alburnett. The Ogden Bulldog finishes his season with a 36-5 record. Ogden’s Avery McCloud lost by fall in 3:07 to Wood bury Central’s Max McGill. McCloud ends his senior year with a 25-18 record.

Larsen of ACGC won 5-2 over Reuben Smith of I-35 to advance to the second consolation round tomorrow. The three-time State qualifier is trying to reach the top eight for the first time and he used a cradle for a three point third period near fall to break a 2-2 tie.

Rowley lost his consolation match to Ben Hansen of Missouri Valley by fall  in 5:13 in the final 1A match of the day for our area. Rowley finishes 29-10 this season.
