One U.S. Congressman from Iowa was able to create an amendment to a U.S. House bill to support high school students.
Iowa’s Fourth Congressional District Representative Randy Feenstra says the House passed the National Apprenticeship Act of 2021, which he says is focused on helping individuals who want to change jobs or who lost their job due to the pandemic. Feenstra wanted to include an amendment that would give some opportunities for high school students.
“They also need to have some apprenticeships, where they can say, ‘Hey I want to be an electrician, or I want to be in construction, or I want to be in IT (information technology),’ whatever it might be. We can’t forget about our high schools. To me that’s where apprenticeships start and that’s sort of the genesis of what I want to do through it’s called mentoring programs.”
Feenstra was happy the amendment passed with bipartisan support, as the bill was introduced by a House Democrat. The legislation is now in the Senate for consideration.
