One controversial topic in the Iowa Legislature this year is the creation of Student First Scholarships, which a bill has passed in the Senate.
State Senator for District 10 Jake Chapman tells Raccoon Valley Radio that there are 34 schools in Iowa that are classified as “federally failing” for students. Chapman notes that Senate File 159 would allow for those families attending those schools to seek their children’s education elsewhere.
“The Governor put forth a bold plan to say for those 34 schools we are going to provide a scholarship for these kids that they can get out of those schools.”
Chapman says in terms of using funds from those public schools, the impact would be no different than if the student moved to another district.
“It’s taxpayer money and the purpose of those tax dollars are to educate children. Where they go should be a choice made by their parents and the student.”
Chapman estimates roughly $3 million that would be potentially going away from the public schools to charter schools, private schools, home schools, among other education options. The bill is now in the House for consideration.
