For the first time since 2013 Greene County qualified its wrestling team for a Dual Meet Regional. That event was held at Winterset High School last night with Coach Zach Beekman’s Rams dropping a first round decision to Clarion-Goldfield-Dows by a 51-30 score. Winterset had a first round bye. The Huskies qualified for the Dual Meet State Tournament Feb. 17 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines by virtue of a 37-36 victory over CGD.
The Cowboys won nine of the 14 weight classes. The Rams forfeited at 106 and 182 and end the dual meet season at eight wins and 10 losses.
Winning matches for Greene County were Brenner Gallagher at 113 lbs., top ranked and undefeated McKinley Robbins at 120, John Sprague at 126, Nathan Black at 160 and Sawyer Schiltz at 285. All five of the Greene County victories were by fall.
Eight Rams will wrestle this Saturday in Adel at ADM high school at 12 p.m. in Class 2A District 1. First and second place finishers in each weight class qualify for the traditional State Tournament in Des Moines Feb. 18-19-20. The Rams won the Woodward Sectional last Saturday and had six champions and two second place finishers. Greene County’s six Sectional Champions are Robbins (120), Brady Stauffer (138), Gavin Scheuermann (145), Black (160), Broc Hammen (220), and Schiltz (285). Also qualifying for the Adel District as second place Sectional finishers are John Sprague (126) and Noble Hoyt (170).
