Governor Kim Reynolds signed a bill into law requiring all Iowa school districts to offer a 100 percent in-person learning option.

A bill in the Iowa Senate passed on Thursday that includes a scholarship for students in “federally failing schools” to receive funding to go to another institution, like private schools.

Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center Superintendent Dennis McClain says his biggest issue is allowing public tax dollars to be used for private institutions.

“We would encourage folks to contact their legislators and tell them we shouldn’t be using that public money for private tuition. Some of them will say it’s about school choice, but with open enrollment and those things, we’ve already got school choice. Parents can choose if they don’t like a particular district, they can go to another district.”

McClain adds that the new law concerning 100 percent in-person learning is something that should be left for local elected school boards to decide.
