Road crews throughout Guthrie County have been working around the clock to battle Monday’s major snowstorm.

Guthrie County Engineer Josh Sebern says most of the highways in the county are passable and open but to avoid gravel roads, especially the southern portion of the county. He doubts the crews can get to all the gravel roads today, and some may still be impassable by tomorrow morning. The crews were out until 5 p.m. last night, started around 5 a.m. this morning and will be out until 5 p.m. tonight. He estimates 10 to 12 inches of snowfall in Guthrie Center and even more around Stuart.

Stuart Public Works Director Jim Henderson says his crews have been out since 7 a.m. yesterday. He says they are running out of places to stack the snow along the side of the road due to the height. He says the city roads are in pretty good shape and passable, but they’ll work to open up the alleyways. He thanked residents for keeping vehicles off the road to allow the crews to work.

Panora Public Works Director Tony Monthei says crews have been working since 2 a.m. and snow is still lightly falling in the city. He says they have a good hold on the roads, but they’re waiting to put salt and sand on the roads until the wind dies down. They were out until 8 p.m. last night. The crews will be out until 4 p.m. trying to get alleys and sidewalks cleared out as well.

Guthrie Center Streets Superintendent Bob Secoy says their crews were out working most of the night and have been able to clear the main streets out. It will take them all day to move the snow in the downtown area. He adds the roads were quiet throughout the night, but there were a few cars parked on the streets that shouldn’t have been.

Guthrie County Sheriff Marty Arganbright says there were a couple cars in the ditch yesterday, but he thinks people are getting used to winter weather driving and they’re being careful. There was a car stranded between Menlo and Stuart, but the driver was picked up and the vehicle is still there. He asks that everyone who can stay home and give the crews a chance to get everybody cleared out.
