
One of the reasons the Greene County wrestling team picked up a Saturday tournament the day following the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference tournament was to get everyone more matches after several meets had been cancelled earlier this season. One of the reasons the Ed Winger Classic at Urbandale was the tournament the Rams entered was to have the Rams see a higher level of competition in the 20-team, mostly Class 3A event. Mission accomplished. The Rams went 19-22 on the day with five of the 11 Greene County individuals placing eighth or higher.
Sophomore McKinley Robbins won the 120 lbs. title to improve to 25-0 on the season. The Class 2A number one ranked wrestler at his weight won his first round match by fall in 1:29, then won 7-6 in the quarterfinals, 8-6 in overtime in the semifinals, and 4-2 in overtime in the championship match. In both overtime matches, Robbins secured a takedown in the first OT as he defeated the number five and number 10 ranked individuals in 3A in the semifinals and finals.
The next highest finish for Greene County was junior Nate Black, fourth at 152 lbs. Senior Brady Stauffer was sixth at 138 lbs., with senior Sawyer Schiltz in seventh place at 285, and junior Brenner Gallagher eighth at 113 lbs. There was no shortage of tough competition for the Rams.
Waukee won the team title by edging out Southeast Polk (Runnels) 217.5 to 212. Bettendorf, North Scott (Eldridge), and Norwalk rounded out the top five. Greene County was eleventh of 20 teams with 77 points, one day after finished in second place at the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference tournament. Some Greene County wrestlers had as many as eight matches in a 24 hour period from Friday to Saturday.
