With an impending winter storm due to come through the Raccoon Valley Radio-listening area later this week, Jefferson Public Works Department will be busy.

Public Works Director Dave Morlan says crews will begin their snow removal procedures once the snow ordinance is in effect, after one-half-inch of snow. Plow trucks will make an initial pass through the residential streets to clear the traveled portion of the roadway, and then they’ll come back to clear the snow to the curb. Morlan notes that crews will take typically two days to clear the snow from the downtown square, which means the snow ordinance will remain in effect following a snow event for two days.

Morlan requests property owners to help them out with curbside mailbox maintenance.

“People need to help us out and remember that it’s the property owners responsibility to clear the snow from in front of their mailbox, and they need to make sure that their mailboxes are in good condition. We have mailboxes in town that lean out over the roadway, and we have some that just haven’t been maintained. They’ll get broke sometimes when we plow the snow.”

Morlan reminds property owners they are not allowed to deposit snow from their property onto the city streets.
