December is Identity Theft Prevention Month, and here are some tips from the Federal Trade Commission to keep yourself safe online this holiday season.
If you get a new computer for the holidays, be sure to wipe the entire hard drive of your previous device using a wipe utility program, whether you sell it or give it to a different family member. If it’s a mobile device like a cell phone, do a factory reset and work with your cell phone provider to make sure your subscriber identification module, or SIM card, is cleared out.
Be careful with quizzes on social media asking you for “40 fun facts about yourself” because many of these questions may be used as “challenge” questions for account password resets.
Keep a close eye on your bank accounts and credit reports for any activity that seems suspicious. If you spot any fraudulent activity, call the companies involved, place a fraud alert on your credit reports and you can report identity theft to the FTC online at identitytheft.gov.
