A temporary federal law that went into effect earlier this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, could be over soon.

The Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) was approved by the Greene County Board of Supervisors in March as part of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). The City of Jefferson adopted a similar measure for city employees. Under the FFCrA, employees could receive up to two weeks of paid sick leave if someone is in self-quarantine, taking care of someone who is quarantined or is taking care of a child due to not having access to schools or daycare.

Greene County Deputy Auditor Billie Hoskins says as of last week, 32 county employees have used FFCPA either for themselves or a family member. Jefferson City Clerk Roxanne Gorsuch says nine city employees have used it, and of those nine, five tested positive.

The Supervisors went a step further to allow county employees an additional ten weeks at ⅔ their wages. Then employees could use their own paid sick leave for the other ⅓ part of their wage, so they can receive full wages while they are not working.

The FFCrA is due to expire on December 31st.
