When the cold weather comes around it’s important to remember safety reminders as it relates to fire hazards.
As it gets colder and people are spending more time around the fireplace or using space heaters it’s important to remember safety tips when it comes to those devices. This also includes holiday items such as Christmas trees and holiday lights. Perry Fire Chief Chris Hinds highlights the importance of staying on top of fire safety during the winter months.
“One-third of all the residential or home fires in the United States, one-third of all those fires occur during the winter months of December, January and February. One-third of all the fires in the United States in homes, residences occur during December, January and February. That is a lot of fires.”
Hinds says the culprit for this can be the increased use of fireplaces, Christmas lights, drop cords, electric heaters that see increased use for entertainment and comfort during the winter months. Hinds advises taking extra steps to ensure that all items are safe.
