The Greene County High School wrestlers went through the month of December with four of the 14 weight classes open due to a variety of reasons. When the Rams take the mat on Jan. 9 in Jewell vs. South Hamilton and North Polk (Alleman), the coaching staff is hoping to be able to fill at least a couple of the open weights. Coach Mark Sawhill’s team went 6-7 in dual meets last month and is 1-0 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference. The Rams have 22 straight victories in HOIAC dual meets and they’ve won the last two conference dual meet and tournament titles.
Assistant coach Chris Conner talked to Raccoon Valley Radio about having a stronger overall lineup this month. “We have a couple kids coming off of injury after the break and we look to see them get into the lineup. We have a new student out for wrestling that will hopefully fill one of the lower weights, so hopefully, going into the dual meets and conference tournament, we’re looking at one or two at the most, open weights. That will help us out a ton because even giving up four weight classes at the beginning of the season, we were still pretty darn competitive.”
