The Greene County High School basketball teams are on the road tonight to open the 2014 portion of the varsity schedule. The Rams play Gilbert in the brand new high school at Gilbert, which is located about 1-1/2 blocks south of the old facility.
The girls’ game will see either the Tigers or Rams suffer a second Heart of Iowa Activities Conference loss. The Tigers are 7-2 overall and 6-1 in the conference while the Rams are 5-2 overall and 5-1 in league play. Rated teams Nevada and North Polk (Alleman) are also 5-1 in the conference. NP visits Greene County in Jefferson on Jan. 7, so Coach Chad Morton’s team will find out in a hurry how strong of a conference title contender they are.
Both boys’ teams are below the .500 mark. Coach Jeramie Hinote’s Rams are 1-4 overall and in the HOIAC while Gilbert is 2-4 in the conference and 3-4 overall.
The Greene County teams have not played since Dec. 17. A scheduled doubleheader in Nevada on Dec. 20 was postponed and no makeup date has been announced.
Coverage of the Rams and Tigers from Gilbert on KG98 begins at 5:45 p.m. with the girls’ game starting at 6 p.m. and the boys’ game to follow.
