While trick-or-treating is a fun tradition, it brings several hazards with it.

According to the National Safety Council, twice as many kids are killed while walking on Halloween than any other day. Perry Police Chief Eric Vaughn advises any drivers to pay extra attention to kids out and about as they’re driving during trick-or-treating hours. Vaughn adds there are a couple of tips to keep children further out of harm’s way, “Make sure your kids are going out with an adult. If you can have some type of bright-colored costume, that’s great. You can also buy reflectors or reflective strips, or something like that, to put on your costumes so light can reflect, and they can be seen a little bit better.”

Vaughn also recommends taking some time to inspect the candy and make sure nothing is out of the ordinary once you get home, “We just want to make sure you go through that candy and make sure it’s all safe, make sure it’s factory packaged, that’s probably the best way to go. If there’s anything that’s partially opened or anything that looks suspicious, make sure that you discard that before your kids dive in there. If something looks like it’s been tampered with, definitely bring it to our attention.”

In addition to the common hazards trick-or-treating brings, Dallas County Public Health recommends everyone participating in Halloween or Beggar’s Night festivities to wear a cloth mask and maintain social distance to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
