A Jefferson man was recently sentenced for a November 2019 series of thefts.

According to court documents, 32-year-old Juan Angel Guzman pled guilty to an amended charge of an aggravated misdemeanor for third-degree theft. He had his two-year prison sentence suspended and was placed on two years of probation. The charge stemmed from an investigation by the Jefferson Police Department.

Guzman had used several checks to purchase prepaid cards from Jefferson Hy-Vee, in which over $1,330 was spent. The business contacted the police department, and an investigation began on November 25, 2019. Guzman was also ordered to pay over $700 in fines and surcharges. Court documents show Guzman was originally charged with a felony for second-degree theft, but the charge was later amended, as per a plea agreement.
