The Greene County Board of Supervisors met Monday in regular session.

During open forum, Churdan resident and City Council member Anthony Minnihan addressed the Board. He asked about the Louis Dreyfus grant opportunity to help with building a new restroom and shelter house in the city park. The Board instructed Minnihan to fill out an application for funds. Next, Minnihan talked about two privately-led projects. One was a restoration project, where donated funds are being used to demolish dilapidated homes and leave a vacant lot for a new home to be built on. The other project is an Iowa Office Down Memorial, which would include memorializing all Iowa officers killed in the line of duty since 1780. Minnihan noted a non-profit organization is being put together for both projects.

Greene County Ambulance Director Michelle Madsen reported that one of her family members tested positive for COVID-19. She is having to self-quarantine, but can still work her shifts with the ambulance department. She added one additional employee is being tested for the virus after experiencing symptoms.

The Board then approved a retirement resolution for out-going County Recorder Marcia Tasler for her 34 years of service as county recorder. They also approved the 2020 weed commissioner’s report, along with the 2021 weed commissioner certification for County Engineer Wade Weiss to continue in that capacity.

The Board also approved a resolution to solicit winter decorations for the courthouse grounds. As per the public art policy, the Board is looking to hang lighted snowflakes from the trees, and their message they want to convey is holiday cheer. Following the Board’s approval, they are expected to approve the resolution to allow for the snowflakes to be hung next week’s meeting.

Finally, the Board discussed its Aflac coverage with insurance broker Peggy Witte. The County has less than five employees that use Aflac for insurance coverage. Following the discussion, Witte will discuss further options with the County’s current carrier for some of its coverage, TransAmerica, and the Board will then make a decision at a future meeting.
