For the first time in the 74-year history of the Iowa High School Music Association’s All-State Music Festival, there will not be a concert.
IHSMA Executive Director Alan Greiner says due to COVID-19 concerns, the decision was made to cancel the event held on the Iowa State University campus in Ames. However, auditions will be held, but virtually. Greiner says entries must be submitted by Wednesday and the judges will make their determinations over the next three days, with a public release of the all-state qualifiers on Sunday.
Greiner says some of the audition process changes include all choir students performing individually rather than an ensemble. Students are required to record different segments without stopping and instead of performing three musical scales, they must perform all 12. He talks about one of the safeguards that are required to minimize as such potential cheating as possible.
“We require them to have a clock in the background. So that we can see the clock, we can see the hands on the clock, we can see the second move, and that clock then tells us that the segment has been completed without interruption.”
