Monday was a good day for running cross-country, and the Greene County girls and boys did just that on the Lincoln Valley Golf Course east of State Center. The occasion was the West Marshall Coed Invitational and Coach Jeff Lamoureux’s boys’ finished first among nine teams. The Rams were sixth in a six team field of girls’ teams.
Leading the Rams in the boys’ race was Logan Woodruff and Luis Velazco, who were second and third, respectively. Woodruff covered the five kilometers (3.1 miles) in 18 minutes 17 seconds, and Velazco was third in 18:26. Ethan Frederick also had a top 10 finish by placing ninth in 19:46 and Jayden Carstensen was 13th in 20:01. Rounding out the five point scorers for the Rams was Dakota Mobley, 19th in 20:31.
Conner Allender led the Greene County girls with a 23rd place finish for the 5K in 26?43. Olivia Shannon was 28th in 27:44, followed by Makala Kafer, 32nd in 29:43, Autumn Stevens, 34th in 30:40, and Sadie Wilson, 36th in 31:24. The Rams ran the minimum five runners to qualify for a team score.
The Rams had 46 points to win the boys’ title with South Hamilton (Jewell) second at 67. Collins-Maxwell was third with 78, followed by Grandview Christian (Des Moines) 93, Colo-NESCO 100, West Marshall 133, and Ankeny Christian Academy 156.
C-M won the girls’ title with 36 points with WM at 42, SH 84, GVC 92, C-N 138, and 153 for Greene County.
Greene County coach Jeff Lamoureux said, “This was a very nice showing for our team. We added this meet after having had to cancel our home meet because of the weather. Sometimes it’s hard to get the team motivated when they weren’t expecting to run a meet, but our kids responded and really stepped up. I’m very proud of their effort.”
Next up for the Rams is the Roland-Story Norsemen Invitational in Story City on Thursday, Sept. 24.
