More information has been released on the single-vehicle rollover that occurred south of Stuart Thursday evening and injured a child.

According to the Adair County Sheriff’s Office, 31-year-old Vincent Edward Long of Stuart was driving a Ford 250 pickup truck northbound near the 1200 block of Stuart Road at about 5:29 p.m. when a witness saw his vehicle go off the shoulder to the right. Long then tried to overcorrect, causing the vehicle to swerve and roll into the ditch. Another witness stayed on scene to aid a child that was ejected in the wreck. The child was airlifted by Mercy One to MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.

A sheriff’s deputy spoke later with Long, who stated his son was in a booster seat behind the driver’s seat, and that he was driving 60-65 miles per hour when he felt the vehicle’s wheels fall off of the roadway. An Iowa State Patrol trooper assisted with measuring the drop off from the shoulder, which was 2-3 inches and would make correcting a tire difficult at those speeds. Long’s vehicle was considered totaled, and he was cited for operating without registration. Stuart Fire, Rescue, and Police departments also responded to the scene.
